Stereotype and Prejudice Marjorie
Title: Prejudice Prejudice Marjorie W. Davis PSY/285 February 28, 2012 Michael Ford Abstract Our discussion is about how does society confirm prejudicial attitudes? How does ones social identity contribute to prejudice? How do emotions encourage prejudicial attitudes? What cognitive processes influence prejudice? Our text has explained competition; competition is an important source of frustration that can fuel prejudice. When two groups compete for jobs, housing, or social prestige, one groupââ¬â¢s goal fulfillment can become the other groupââ¬â¢s frustration. PrejudiceSociety confirms prejudice by what you possess and how much money you have. If you are not in a certain bracket such as (high class or middle class), you are considered poor. Prejudice helps justify the economic and social superiority of those who have wealth and power. Of course they will not give a chance at credit to buy a house, car, or start a business. Society, also confirm prejudice by the way you dress o r the car you drive. Society confirms prejudicial attitude by focusing on personal individuality and Independence, as opposed to becoming a team with neighbors and friends.I am so glad that God looks at the heart and man looks at the outer appearance. One's social identity contributes base on a realization of limited environmental control. The more you believe that you can impact your environment or social status, the less roll social identity plays Emotions really affect prejudicial attitudes because most of the time people make decisions based on their emotions. Emotions of fear and sadness or joy and gladness, which can cause you to project feelings in a hurtful way, rather than in a helpful manner Cognitive process influence prejudice through stereotyping, which cause prejudice. This can be a result of the normal ways in which we simplify and organize the world. Stereotypes are the social scripts we have in our heads about others and the roles we believe they should play in our s ocially constructed world. It is important to have the understanding of the basic concepts of prejudice and racism, and how to lessen their destructive effect (Rosado,à 1995-2012). Reference Rosado, C. (1995-2012). Personal Plan: Reflection Essay
I was shocked at how closely my career interests and my results were matched. Previous to these career building plans we have been doing, I was almost entirely sure I had chosen the right degree to pursue. Now after doing these activities, they have helped solidify that my career choice is definitely appropriate for me, and it aligns with my skills and strengths as well. For instance; researching, is my second largest strength. I already knew that I loved to investigate and dig deeper into things, particularly human behaviors. Therefore, Psychology is the perfect major for me because it is aligned directly with my skills, strengths, and interests. I had never really put much thought into my strengths before, per-say. When I would consider strengths and competencies I would mostly think about general skills, like reading or math. I never considered such things as; adaptability or innovation, to be a skill. Now that this activity has put my certain strength into perspective, I think my results match up really well with my competency skills. I knew already that I was good at taking initiative and investigating situations but, it did surprise me however, to find out I did fairly well at adapting to change. I do not personally think I am fabulous at this particular skill, so having a visual aid to help add depth and meaning to each of my own personal strengths and competencies is wonderful. SMART goals are a very efficient way for me to break down my long-term goals into shorter, more specific and measurable ones. Using SMART goals as a part of my personal plan helps me set milestones to see what needs to be achieved; by what time, and in which order, so I can reach my ultimate goal. They have taught me how to use a rewards system for achieving my goals. This way, I am training myself to; work now and play later, so to speak. Exploring in depth what each of my competencies truly means, trying to recognize, and practice them to the best of my ability will help build on the skills I already have. For example: organization is one of my personal strengths, so when I catch myself in a situation where I am applying this skill, I will now try and recognize and build on it. Asking friends and family to point out certain strengths and weaknesses will also help me build on each skill because I will have, at that point, be made conscious to the fact that I am utilizing a certain strength. From there I can apply different strategies as to build on each skill, or lack thereof, and improve each one. I think it is important to focus on both your strengths and weaknesses. If you solely focus on your strengths, then you are not building on, or learning any new competencies. If you focus only on your weaknesses, it might start to have a negative effect on you and any progress you might be trying to make. I will personally be putting more effort into building up the competencies that I am currently weaker in than others. I clearly know now, what my ultimate strengths are and I can see where I have the ability to do some things more efficiently than others. So I feel it is important for me to work on both my strengths and weaknesses, just to pay extra attention to the things I am not fabulous at, and build on them. As well as recognize my strengths and how to exercise them to my fullest potential or ability.

Accidents Happen All the Time
It involved a car border line illegal with balding tires, and brakes set on suicide mode. The person driving the vehicle of doom was a struggling college student, with little and or no money. The lady driving a car right off the lot spoke with thick New York accent and had the temper to match. Itââ¬â¢s funny how at any moment, thoughts turn into actions, actions turn into events, and suddenly were left to face the aftermath. That day specifically was a mess of intertwining events that lead to two people meeting in unfavorable circumstances. Everyone gets involved in accidents, whether theyââ¬â¢re cautious or reckless. The driver of a black kia death machine was especially cautious considering she knew it was not the best in regards to safety. She knew it wasnââ¬â¢t long before some freak accident would cross his path, but she would try to avoid it like hell. The fact is life is a recycling wheel, in which past leads to present, and every action has its foot print in the future. It was early in the morning, around 7:30 and the streets were busy with stop and go traffic in every direction. The sky was overcast, gray clouds blocking all sunlight, with rain pouring down in scatters. The streets were glossy with rain, and the reflection of the lights shone on the surface. Traffic was absolutely ridiculous and early commuters are often aggressive if not outright maniacs. The young woman was driving her way home from a late night with friends, still a little groggy since she wasnââ¬â¢t use to being up so early. She had driven down that road a million times and never had any issues with the morning flow. She was just about to merge into the next lane, since the turn for the highway was coming up further ahead. She started to drive over and saw the car ahead break lights shining brightly through the light rain. She began to pump the breaks, when suddenly the car didnââ¬â¢t slow down as expected. The car ahead seems to being nearing quickly, and her heart started to race. She pulls the emergency break and feels the drive of the car as it pushes forward regardless. In mere moments a normal drive home turned into a scary event. The sound of screeching tires pierced the air, a loud thud broke the morning silence, and what followed can be described as an atmosphere of confusion and anger. The driver in the black kia didnââ¬â¢t know what to do. She had just hit a car from behind, and she knew he had to get out and confront the other driver. It was raining, which made it entirely more uncomfortable, and all around him cars honked and whizzed by in frustration. She opened the door cautiously with shaking hands. A head a lady comes at her with craziness in her eyes, staring directly at her. ââ¬Å"You little punk, are you freaking blindâ⬠. The lady that hit the car was trying to stay calm saying ââ¬Å"Lady, get a grip. Your car is still drivableâ⬠¦ my bumper is sitting on the groundâ⬠. The lady was furious; she screamed for 5 minutes before she noticed the other driver wasnââ¬â¢t saying anything and then she apologized. The two began to explore the damage, which inflicted much more harm on the kia then the new 2013 escalade. The new car had a few scratches, but the young college studentââ¬â¢s car looked like it had a head on collision with a semi-truck. It wasnââ¬â¢t even the worst Part of everything because the faulted driver had no insurance, and she knew she was going to get totally screwed by the man in blue because she has zero car insurance. The cops arrived on scenes approximately two hours later. The thought of fleeing the scene had cross the faulted drivers mind more than a few times. If it werenââ¬â¢t for a bumper half on the ground, and an exchange of information holding her back, she has been half way home and scott free. Three hundred dollars in fines, and lawsuit pending, that young driver figured something crucial out. Donââ¬â¢t drive without insurance, and if you are donââ¬â¢t do it with a car with bad breaks because you will inevitably screw your life over and get into an accident. Project Management- Group Report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words
Project Management- Group Report - Essay Example They are: initiating; planning; executing; monitoring and controlling; and closure (PMI 2008). Together these process groups have 42 activities that are required of the project manager (PMI 2008). PMI (2008) indicates that they include: The initiation process group performs a number of functions. These include defining the project ââ¬â why the project was initiated and the benefits to be derived from its performance. It also involves getting the necessary authorisation to begin project activities. The planning process involves establishing the scope, refining the objectives and defining the action to be taken to attain the stated objectives. The scope indicates the work that needs to be done, the deliverables and the results that will be achieved as a result of carrying out the project (Schwalbe 2009). Here is where the different aspects of the project management plan are developed and integrated. In managing the scope of the project the work breakdown structure (WBS) is created. The WBS is a useful method that is used to identify the scope of the project. It uses a hierarchical tree structure to break down the scope into planned outcomes (Blokdijk 2007). This process also takes into consideration the procurement of material ââ¬â in which case the process of obtaining the canvas and other tools necessary for painting will be dealt with. A risk management plan is normally done where qualitative risk analysis is done to identify risks. They are quantified and the responses to counter them are planned. A very important aspect of planning is the management of communication. It is critical to the planning and execution phases. It is important that any changes to the plan are communicated to all stakeholders. Other important plans that forms part of the project management plan are the budget, quality and human resource plan. A budget has to be done to ensure that the

After the tan lines have aded Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
After the tan lines have aded - Essay Example Cancer is probably the most alarming illness that can claim thousands of lives in just a year. While some may be cured with the use of the latest technologies, others are just too severe that several treatments are not an assurance that a person will be able to live a normal life after undergoing a number of therapies and medicine intakes. So, should indoor tanning be banned for minorsThere are several factors which contribute to having a skin cancer and perhaps the most common and well known cause of it is too much exposure in the sun. It is not new to almost everyone that the sun's ray is at its strongest from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM so it is advisable that if one is going to go outside between the said periods of time, it is recommended to apply sunscreen, wear a hat or even sun glasses to protect the eyes. Nevertheless, in a recent survey conducted by American Academy of Dermatology, over 10,000 young people ages 12-18 from all 50 states, found that the use of sunscreen on sunny d ays was practiced by only 34.4 percent. The said survey also discovered that natural sunlight wasn't the only significant source of UV exposure for teens nowadays. Approximately 10 percent of teens had used tanning beds. (http://medi-smart.com)Tanning is "IN", or so what these teens thought. And who does not want a sun-kissed look everyday The look of summer never fails to leave a sexy impression on almost everyone that girls of any age would do almost anything just to get that "just got from the beach" look. Almost any thing that they are even willing to take their lives is at risk. With indoor tanning, those who wish to achieve a bronze look don't need to wait for summer to come or pray for a good weather for sun bathing. Because anytime of the day, regardless of the climate and weather, one can obtain a perfect tan she has always wanted by just merely going to a tanning salon. However, although indoor tanning is a booming business in the United States, generating estimated revenues in excess of $5 billion a year, several skin specialists, including WHO (World Health Organization) says tanning beds could be responsible for an epidemic of skin cancer in the future because teens love to tan. (http://www.poynter.org) In Canada, the National Cancer Institute estimated that doctors will detect more than 80,000 skin cancer cases, and up to 5,000 of those will be melanoma. (http://www.cyc-net.org) Malignant melanoma is a less common, but a potentially deadly, type of skin cancer. Melanoma has been linked to intense intermittent and long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation during childhood or the teenage years, (http://www.crd.bc.ca) and an awful truth is that public health officials in Ontario, Canada learned that tanning salons were even catering to children as young as eight. (http://www.skincancer.org) In light with this, this study will find out if indoor tanning is one of the main causes of skin cancer of minors and if there are other side effects of this. Also, this study will give rise to a supposition if it is recommended to be used by people who are below 18 years of age. This will also discuss further the current Bylaw Regulating Tanning Facilities and if this law is enough to defend the teenagers out there on the possible hazards of indoor tanning. Basking under the sun has been one of the favorite past times of the people especially during summer. Strolling along the beach in a stunning bikini and a perfect tan line to boot never fails to get a second glance from anyone. Nowadays, being tan is already becoming a fashion statement that almost everyone is dying to achieve the sexy tan lines they get from

Spanish Slavery Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Spanish Slavery - Essay Example Despite being a slave, he wrote between the lines of domination while being concurrent with the prevailing circumstances. He did this with the objective of creating a 19th century alternative image of Spanish Caribbean societies that needed further critical perspectives and considerations. In this essay, I will compare Manzano with the figure of the Count in The Last Supper, in holding that despite the varying positions the two characters occupied in their respective settings, religion was a dominating factor in crystallizing their respective personalities in the context of what they delivered. The argument will be made very clear by analyzing their respective approaches towards religion and how they used religion in achieving their ends. Main Body The film, The Last Supper, directed by Tomas Gutierrez Alea (1976), depicts that in a rather imprudent attempt to add to the knowledge of his African slaves, the Count, who is pious as well as guilt ridden, asks twelve chosen slaves to hav e dinner with him on a Maundy Thursday during Easter, obviously with the intention of re-enacting the Last Supper with himself performing the role of Christ. As they are involved in eating and drinking, the Count feeds the slaves with a lot of religious oratory and tries to guide them about the tenets of Christianity. He proposes to give them an off the next day, which is Good Friday and pledges that he will free one amongst them. But he does not meet up with his commitment the next day and the slaves stage a revolt. Both, the Last Supper as well as Juan Francis Manzanoââ¬â¢s autobiography relate to the lives of slaves in Cuban sugar plantations during the late eighteenth century and are real life stories. The filmââ¬â¢s center piece is the bizarre circumstances under which the last supper is supervised by the Count. In keeping with a truly religious fervor, he starts by washing and kissing all the slavesââ¬â¢ feet as each one of them is intensely amused at the mad behavior . However, the film depicts that despite the occasional religious sentiments exhibited by the Count, who is the dominating character, he can be easily seen as an authority figure that is guilt ridden and immensely mysterious. It becomes evident from the film that the truth relative to human behaviors cannot be hidden and eventually surfaces with the actions of individuals. It appears the count is attempting to demonstrate to the slaves, his knowledge and adherence to Christian dogmas and beliefs. In this process, he clearly gives away his lack of clarity about Christianity when he tells the slaves that sorrow is the only thing that humans can happily give to God, adding that anyway, everything belongs to God. The slaves get confused and are absorbed at the thought of what he implies when he speaks about consuming Christââ¬â¢s body and blood in the forms of bread and wine. Following the rebellion by the slaves, the film ironically depicts that the Count himself gets crucified as a n unlikely son of God for denying justice and property to the slaves. Autobiography of a Slave is a first hand account of Juan Francisco Manzanoââ¬â¢s life, times and struggles. Monzano has narrated his story from a first person perception.
